Okay so this happened to me back in maybe March. Got the low storage warning at like 2am, which is always fun, went digging through settings to see what was actually eating up space, and TikTok alone was sitting at something like eleven gigs. I barely had any videos saved in there either, so that number genuinely didn't make sense to me at first.
Apparently it's pretty common once you look into it. Figured I'd jot down what I found instead of doing my usual thing of deleting the app and reinstalling every couple months.
Where That Space Is Actually Going
Most people assume it's their saved videos hogging all the room. That's part of it sure, but honestly it's a smaller chunk than you'd think.
The bulk of it is cache. TikTok grabs stuff before you even get to it, videos that are still a few swipes away start loading in the background so there's no lag when you actually reach them. That all sits in a cache folder that just keeps growing until something clears it.
Then on top of that there's watch history, half finished drafts you filmed and never posted, and thumbnails for basically every single video you've scrolled past, even the ones you watched for two seconds before swiping away.
Why It's Worse on iPhone Specifically
Not totally sure why but iOS seems to let TikTok cache more aggressively than I'd expect. My guess is the app's just built around keeping scroll smooth above everything else, so it keeps grabbing stuff in the background whether you're actively watching or not.
Add in how often people open the app throughout the day, sometimes without even really thinking about it, and yeah, cache builds up fast between clears.
Clearing Cache Won't Delete Your Account
Good news at least, clearing the cache doesn't touch your account, your posted videos, followers, none of that. It just wipes out the temporary junk that's built up.
In app it's usually somewhere under settings, then privacy, then free up space or cache, depending which version you're running since TikTok moves this menu around sometimes. Takes maybe ten seconds and can free up a few gigs easily if it's been a while since the last clear.
I try to do this every couple weeks now instead of waiting until I'm getting that annoying daily warning.
What About Stuff You Actually Want to Keep
This part's different from cache clearing though. If there's actual content you want to hold onto, drafts you're working on, your own footage, clips from other creators, clearing cache won't touch any of that, but it's still sitting there taking up real space long term.
For anyone who posts a lot, unfinished drafts pile up more than people realize honestly. Worth scrolling through that folder every so often and just deleting the ones that clearly aren't getting finished.
One thing that actually helps, if it's just one video from someone else you're after, grabbing that single clip directly is way lighter on storage than letting the app cache everything forever. Found a guide specifically about downloading TikTok videos on iPhone that walks through it step by step.
Small Stuff That Actually Helps
Clear cache on some kind of schedule instead of waiting for the warning to force it.
Go through drafts once in a while and cut the ones sitting there half finished forever.
Anything you're saving long term, put it in your regular photo library instead of trusting the app to hold onto it, since app storage tends to get wiped during updates or reinstalls anyway.
Restart the app every now and then too. Small thing, but it does seem to clear some temporary buildup from long scrolling sessions.
Anyway
TikTok being like this isn't really a bug, it's just how the app's designed to keep scrolling smooth. Once you know where the space actually goes, it stops feeling like some mystery and just becomes another thing you check on your phone every once in a while, kind of like clearing out old photos.
